Crippling Confusion

Amid studying for a British Literature exam that I have tomorrow morning, completing an article summary for the Health and Wellness class that I have right after my exam, and catching up on readings for my Post-Colonial Theory class, (and finding time to write this blog post -clearly my priorities are in order,) I had to register for my next semester classes this morning - quite the stressful situation. I only need one more class to complete my English degree (a Shakespeare lecture) and so I had 3 more classes open and ready to go. Though I have considered taking a Sociology minor, poor planning on my part resulted in having to take too many classes in a short period of time - I'll admit it was ambitious of me to think, even for a second, that I could complete a minor as a second semester senior. Enter the panic.

Le sigh...what I wish I was doing right now - eating breakfast in bed
I know what I want to do after I graduate - go into the publication industry, preferably as a marketing or advertising agent, but I am open to whatever creative outlet opportunities arise. While I always considered my liberal arts degree to be sufficient enough, was it really? Doubt started settling in. Why didn't I decide last year, when I had plenty of credit time available, to double major in English and Economics? If not that, then why didn't I pick up a minor in Sociology earlier than at the end of this semester? I loved my Philosophy courses, so why didn't I consider getting a degree in Philosophy along with English? I know I don't need anything other than my English degree; I truly believe that the career I want to go into has more to do with how I have taken my education and bettered myself because of it than the amount of degrees I have. But what if it's not enough? What if I want to graduate knowing that I have more than one degree?
She must have had a difficult time figuring out her class schedule also :P

3 open class spaces. Sheer panic. What to do? Stop. And think. I could still declare a concentration within my English major and that was exactly what I did - I will be going into the English Department tomorrow to declare a concentration in Rhetoric. The three classes I signed up for underneath a rhetoric concentration will definitely be beneficial to a potential career in publication. While it is not another degree, it will give me a crucial learning experience that I will be able to apply to any future career - and that is what college and education in general is about anyway right? Well, that and all of those crazy weekend keg parties.

Trusting my instincts has gotten me to where I am today - and I couldn't be happier!
Well, I'm off to attend my evening lecture. Good luck to all of those who find themselves in a similar position I was in this morning! My only advice to you, learning from my mistake, is to think about the future and plan ahead. If you're unsure, trust your gut instinct and don't take "no" for an answer. I truly believe what is meant to be will be.
Happy Thursday!

Good luck with school, Stephanie! I found selecting a major officially to be a challenge, as well. I was a Psychology major, then added a Business minor during Senior year. Now I'm in Grad school aiming for an MBA, and really enjoying it! :)

having a liberal arts degree is definitely tough this day and age. i graduated with a journalism degree and for the most part, i love that. but sometimes i get so mad at the lack of opportunities available in the workforce for people like us.

good luck on your class schedule!
