Flooded

I was planning on posting last night about how much I love rainy days. Despite trudging to classes with my head bent against the wind and jumping over puddles, I took a nice hot shower, put on my fuzzy socks and cuddled under my blankets, ready to write a post and then watch a movie with the hopes that classes would get canceled all while listening to the steady rhythm of rain pounding against my window pane. And then I got the call from my landlord: all six of us needed to evacuate our house due to potential flooding - we live on a river front and with the estimated amount of rain, it is predicted to be the worst flooding in Binghamton history and that "the river level is over 25 feet, above the 25-foot record set in 2006 and more than 11 feet above flood stage. It's expected to rise another foot or so" and "it's unknowable at this point as to whether or not those flood walls in the city of Binghamton will hold."
So late last night, all of us packed extra clothing and our valuables and drove over to our university's Event Center where it was packed with the local community members. To pre-register would take a couple of hours and who knew how long it would take to actually register, get assigned a space, and then actually get to fall asleep. So we decided that we would find another place to stay and I was lucky enough to have a friend that lived on campus who generously offered me to stay with her. My other housemates either stayed with their friends or found a hotel.

When I woke up this morning the rained stopped, and I thought that everything would be fine and we could all go back to our house. However, roads are flooded and closed off, the river's in the area are at a record breaking high, and it is estimated that thousands of people have been evacuated. According to MSNBC, "the worst is yet to come. That was the message stressed this afternoon by state and county officials during a news conference regarding the flood event that leaders are saying is of “historical proportions'.”
Our local Walmart is completely gone. Those are the tops of cars.
We are all safe which is what matters most, but the news sites are continuously reporting that the situation is going from bad to worse and our landlord informed us that our first floor is flooded which is where mine and Meg's room is. I don't have any valuables left in the house, and I moved things to a higher shelf, but there is going to be a ton of damage. However, I'm keeping my thoughts positive and am surprisingly calm, so all should be well.

If you are in the Northeast area, please stay safe and dry!

That sucks, sweetie! There's been flooding all over NJ, but we were fortunate enough not to be too affected by it. Glad to hear you're ok and in good spirits and I hope this all gets resolved for you soon.

Oh my gosh! I am in such a little LA bubble that I didn't realize the weather was still so bad back there. We're having a heat wave and it's hard to imagine rain.

Stay safe!!

Oh..my goodness..I so feel for you. We've had flooding all summer on the missouri, due to big rains up stream. Ours was basically man made..still caused so much damage for a lot folks. Even little towns wiped out in Iowa and Missouri. This has really been a bad summer. I can only hope we won't have an awful winter.

Its amazing how fast water can move and the damage it can produce. We had hail stones a few weeks ago that knocked out lots of windows in cars and houses. The weather is getting freaky. Around Austin, TX..massive wild fires. Frightening in lots of places.

You just never know these days how bad things are gonna get. I've had a bag packed this summer for things like this. Its so hard to leave where you live.

Ohmigosh I had no idea the flooding had gotten so out of control (I've had midterms all week, and haven't been keeping up with the news). I'm so sorry to hear about this, Stephanie - stay safe! :)
