Summer Reading List

Hello Darlings,

Apologizes for being absent for over a week. I haven't really been doing anything which caused for no outfit posts nor did I have any inspiration to talk about fashion or beauty. Hopefully this will change as I think I might go crazy and die of boredom if I'm not around humanity.

That being said, when I do have a lot of alone time, I love to bury my head in books. Throughout the school year, I'm usually too busy to read novels and although I do read some great books since I am an English major, I don't have time to read the books that I want to read or any guilty pleasure books. **I'm an English major for two reasons: 1.) There is no communications/advertising major offered in my school and guidance counselors explained that a liberal arts degree is desired in that field and 2.) I LOVE READING (the massive amounts of essays and papers that come with that is not as desirable, but hey, what are ya going to do?)

So this summer I am compiling a Summer Reading List:
  • 1984 - George Orwell
  • The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
  • Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
  • The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand
  • The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
  • Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
  • The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
  • Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
  • Little Black Book of Style - Nina Garcia
  • The Nanny Diaries - Emma McLaughlin
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
  • The Devil Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger
  • The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
  • The Adventures of Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens

I know that it is a long list and I probably will not be able to get through the whole list for the summer, so if you lovely readers feel that there is any book in particular that I should read before the others, please feel free to suggest it. Or, if there is a book that you would recommend, please let me know and I will look into reading it. Ps. It does not have to be a classic novel or fiction, etc. It can be anything that can be read (ie: poems, short stories, fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, self-help, style books, etc) I am open to anything and everything that has words on a page :)

Some of the books have been on my reading list for a while but others I added after looking through the Rory Gilmore Book Club Newsletter (for those of you who were huge Gilmore Girls fans!)

Kisses!

I'm an English major for basically the same reasons too! And because I kind of weirdly love writing research papers! My books to read this summer are so embarrassingly long because I buy books and neglect to read them!
But on your list:
Of Mice & Men is a quick read, but really quite good!
To skip: Well anything Charles Dickens I say skip but I have a bias against that author! (Aka hate him!), The Devil Wears Prada- personally I much preferred the movie. And if you wanna read something by her read "Everyone Worth Knowing" there's more of a plot there rather than a bitter former editor's assistant ranting over her ex-boss. And 1984 I kind of really didn't like just because I found it kind of disappointing in the end. And there's this HUGE section in the middle that's like a guide that was literally PAINFUL to read.

As for the others, I haven't read, though I know my friend adores The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Cheers to books, haha!

Wow that is a lot of books! Good for you! I need to start reading more! Those are some classics that I need to read! Somehow I got away with not having to read essential books in high school and college...

Out of all of these, I've only read "The Bell Jar" and "Little Black Book of Style", but I recommend both! And I definitely want to do a lot of reading this summer too - you just added a few more books to my list!

I love reading as well. I see you have 1984 and Dorian Gray on your list. Both are so fantastic! But I also have to recommend 2 to you though. The Book Thief and The Shadow of the Wind. Both are fantaastic.

There are some great choices here, the picture of Dorian Grey is amazing and quite short so it's easy to get through.

I currently spend an hour or so commuting to work by train/tube and I read all the way there and back so I am getting through books so fast! Thanks for the link to Rory's Book Club - I was and still am a massive Gilmore Girls Fan so I will definitely check out their suggestions!
